Submission Guidelines

Submission Deadline:
April 17th, 2023

Founded in 1918, the Foreign Press Association (“FPA”) is the oldest association of foreign journalists in the United States of America. This year, the philanthropic arm of the FPA, the The Foreign Press Foundation, will celebrate its 30th Anniversary of our awards and scholarship program to support the next generation of foreign correspondents.

To mark this important milestone, we are introducing a new fellowship program which will offer an FPA fellowship and financial award to between three and five exceptional students. The fellowship will include mentoring and support from FPA members, the opportunity to contribute to the mission of the FPA, and financial awards that start at $1000.

The selection of winners will be based on the following criteria:
  • Applicants are enrolled at a U.S. graduate school of journalism during the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
  • Citizen of a foreign country
  • Write an opinion article or submit a multimedia presentation
  • Have a record of journalistic excellence
  • Write a statement on how they will leverage the Fellowship / funds to support their career

The FPA is now accepting applications for the 2023 Foreign Press Association Fellowships through April 17th.

An impartial panel of journalists, editors, publishers, media directors, and other professionals will select the winning awards.  Fellowship Awardees will be invited to receive their awards at the FPA’s Annual Awards Presentation in New York City.

Applicants MUST:

  1. Provide, either a written Op-Ed, (between 600-800 words), or in a multimedia format, (not exceeding 3 minutes viewing time, along with an overview of the multimedia presentation), a submission in answer to the following:  "Are journalistic ideals of balance and objectivity still relevant? Should media present both sides of a story and give equal time to all points of view? Drawing on coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine or U.S. election results deniers, and other news stories from your home country, how should journalists present stories about events where lies and misinformation are being presented as facts?"
  2. Compose a one-page statement indicating how a scholarship award will benefit their career plans and objectives.  (Indicate why financial aid is needed, and list all scholarships and fellowships you have received towards your studies in the United States).
  3. Present evidence of enrollment in a graduate program of journalism during the 2022/2023 or 2023/2024 academic year.
  4. Submit letters of reference. (ie. A professor at the school of journalism, an editor of their recently published work)
  5. Submit TWO samples of published or broadcast work. Printed articles shall not exceed 1000 words and multi-media shall not exceed 15 minutes. (If in a foreign language, please send an English translation).
  6. Submit a curriculum vitae.  Outline academic background and previous experience in journalism, and detailing all scholarships and fellowships.
  7. A copy of the identity page of your passport, and your F-1 or J-1 Visa. Only applicants with F-1 and J-1 Visas during 2020 are eligible for consideration.  Students of U.S.A. citizenship are not eligible for FPA scholarships
  8. Confirm, on an honor basis, that a report will be submitted on the use of the scholarship award prior to the first anniversary of the award, along with a summary of subsequent career development.

IMPORTANT:

Please include all of the above documents with your application attached in an email to [email protected]. Applications WITHOUT the documents will NOT be considered.

The deadline for applications is 11.59 pm EDT on 17th of April, 2023

No late entries will be accepted.

Please email submissions to [email protected].
Submissions through postal services will not be accepted.

All manuscripts should be in 12-point type, with one-inch margins, and sequentially numbered pages.

Multi-media is defined as one or a combination of the following genres: video, mixed media, radio broadcast, and/or photo essay.

All entries must be submitted in English.

Your submission must be in one of the following file forms: .doc, .pdf, .txt, .mp3, .mp4, or .mov.

Submission of scholarship application to the Foreign Press Foundation confirms authorization to publish applicant’s Op-Ed and/or multimedia presentation without expectation of compensation.

All decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Winners are responsible for the tax implications of their awards.
