The 2015 FPA Scholarship Awards were held on Thursday, 21st May, 2015 at The University Club, New York City.
2015 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
This year's scholarship applicants were asked to write an OP-ED piece on the following subject:
“Certain action taken by police officers, and the related protests in the United States, have been the subject of high-profile media attention in recent months.
Little is published about the positive results that major cities’ police departments are able to achieve.
What are your views on how the media has covered recent stories, and your thoughts on the lessons for reporters both in the USA and your home country?”

María Sánchez is a Spanish journalist and Fulbright fellow in the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism fellow, where she is developing The Fuego, digital platform that provides smart and compelling stories for young Latinos in the United States. María has always developed her career in online projects: she launched and was the digital editor in chief of Condé Nast Traveler Spain magazine (Traveler.es). The site has received two Silver Lovie Awards (Best European Travel Site and Best Editorial Work), a special mention at the Webbie Awards (Best Design). It has more than 1.200.000 unique users per month.
She worked as a reporter for Soitu.es, a defunct digital media hub that won the Online News Association excellence award for a non-English site for two consecutive years, (small category in 2008 and large in 2009). She has also freelanced for El Pais, where she wrote with Alvaro Llorca, the Music and Travel blog ‘Motel Americana‘. María managed the online shorts film festival Notodofilmfest, and she coordinated the social media strategy of PhotoEspaña, photography festival;
Revista Eñe, literature magazine; Notodo.com, cultural website. In her pre-digital era, she was a reporter for El Mundo de Tehuacan, in Mexico.

Janosch Delcker is a journalist from Berlin, Germany, covering politics, inequality, and globalization.
Currently, he is an ERP Fellow / M.A. candidate at Columbia Journalism School in their M.A. politics program.
Previously, he worked as a staff reporter for SPIEGEL Online and Deutsche Welle (DW). Publications include SPIEGEL Online, DW, The New York Times, ZDF, Deutschlandradio, rbb Inforadio, Die Tageszeitung (taz), European Voice (The Economist), and Idealist agazine.
In 2014, he released the documentary “The Hidden,” about hidden homelessness in the European Union. His 2010/11 online video series “Urban Observations“ was awarded with the Mulert-Award for Mutual Understanding by the German Fulbright Alumni Association.Janosch holds a B.A. degree in Literature, Music, and Media from Humboldt-University Berlin (2009), and a Master’s Degree from New York University (2011).

Hanna Qassis is an experienced TV broadcast journalist who has reported on air for Press TV in the West Bank for 3 years covering politics, economics, arts, military raids, clashes and demonstrations.
He is a graduate of Birzeit University with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in International Studies.
Hanna is currently a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism’s Longform TV & Documentary program.
While studying at UC Berkeley, Hanna has covered politics for Oakland North, the journalism school’s online news publication. He has also filmed and produced several news stories for California News Service on topics like gentrification in Oakland and music that brought together artists in conflicting African nations.

Tusha Mittal is an investigative journalist covering politics, development and national security. Originally from India, she first began reporting as an undergraduate student at DePauw University. In 2008, she returned home to work for Tehelka, a New-Delhi based investigative news magazine.
Even while India emerged as an economic power, her work documented the country’s underbelly – the fault lines of mining and environment, the “honor killings” of women who dared to love, and the indoctrination of children in radical religious camps.
In 2009, when the Indian government deployed troops to combat left-wing Maoist insurgents, Tusha found herself traveling through the conflict zone. She reported on many human rights violations – the extra-judicial killings of civilians as insurgents, the burning of entire villages in scorched-earth operations, and the rape of tribal women by security forces.
