MAP condemns the Myanmar junta’s attempt to usurp ambassador posts in UK and UN; calls on British Government and UNGA to refuse accreditation
In a press release on 19 July, the Myanmar Accountability Project announced that they condemn the attempts of the Myanmar coup leaders to usurp top ambassadorships in London and the diplomatic mission at the UN. Upon research into their past, MAP discovered that Aung Thurein, who has been appointed the position at the United Nations, was in the military at the time of the coup; the same applies to Htun Aung Kyaw, who has been appointed a position at the embassy in London. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has condemned the Myanmar coup in the past. The FPA supports MAP in calling on the UN and the UK government to refuse accreditation to these newly appointed officials.
We encourage you to watch our press briefing from March 2021 where we discuss the coup.
